Biography

Dr Oloruntoba (aka Dr Toba) completed his undergraduate medical education at the prestigious College of Medicine of the University of Lagos in Lagos, Nigeria in 1983. He obtained postgraduate medical training in Internal Medicine in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and in the United States of America. He is an internal medicine physician with a subspecialist interest in diseases of old age. He is on the UK General Medical Council’s specialist register and licensed with DHA.
Internal medicine physicians (aka internists) deploy scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of non-surgical, non-gynaecological/non-obstetric adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness. According to the American College of Physicians, ‘’They see the big picture and analyze, consider and make connections from multiple data sets and identify solutions for optimal health outcomes. They have life-long relationships with adult patients, and their recommendations are based on each patient’s unique situation’’. Internal medicine physicians are fondly referred to as the ‘’doctor’s doctor,’’ as other doctors often call upon them to help connect the dots to unravel clinical problems.
Dr Toba has had over 40 years of experience practising in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the USA, and the Middle East. He has experience at the consultant level at various UK hospitals, including the Homerton University Hospital, London, King George/Queen’s Hospitals, London, Worthing Hospital, Croydon University Hospital, London, and the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, where he also served as the Clinical Service Lead.
He is an enthusiastic educator. He was a senior lecturer in these hospitals and contributed to training medical students and junior doctors. He is accredited as a physician’s educator by the Royal College of Physicians of London and holds a postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education from the University of Dundee (Scotland). He has served on various Royal College of Physicians of London’s education committees, including acute internal medicine speciality certificate examination standard setting group (SSG) and question writing group (QWG).
Before joining Somerset Clinic, he was an Internal and Geriatric Medicine consultant at the Mediclinic City Hospital Dubai from 2013 to 2023. At Mediclinic, he was instrumental in establishing several clinical protocols and Guidelines, including the first Antibiotic Guidelines in the hospital. This latter initiative later informed the development of antibiotic guidelines across the Mediclinic Group. He also served at the hospital as a committee member of the Patient Safety and Quality subcommittee and was the Lead physician for the Joint Committee International (JCI)’s Care of Patient Chapter in the hospital for several years. He was appointed as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the Mohammed bin Rashid University of Medicine and Dentistry.
