Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic procedure that can help you achieve a brighter, more confident smile. The treatment is used to brighten your teeth and remove stains. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments.

Teeth discolouration and staining can be attributed to several factors, including diet, smoking and ageing. Before whitening is carried out on teeth that are otherwise healthy (to prevent damage), the dentist ensures that no stains remain from previous treatments by doing dental cleaning.

The whitening process begins with a consultation, during which your dentist will take a close look at your teeth and discuss the options with you.

A whitening gel with an active ingredient (a peroxide) is applied to the tooth surface. This active ingredient diffuses the stained molecules present in the teeth; hence, causing them to look brighter and much cleaner.

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that can either be done in the dental office or through a home kit provided by your dentist. The effects of teeth whitening can last up to three years but it will profoundly depend on diet and lifestyle. Therefore, dentists recommend it with a gap of one year. Teeth sensitivity is the most common side effect that patients can experience. However, it is temporary for which the dentist may prescribe pain relief medication or apply varnish for relief.

Teeth Cleaning

Teeth cleaning procedure entails removing accumulated plaque and tartar to ensure the teeth and its supporting structures are clean and smooth. Layers of plaque build-up and tartar can lead to numerous dental problems, including cavities, periodontal disease, enamel wear, and many more.

Dental cleaning is divided into two parts: scaling and polishing. The scaling is usually performed by an ultrasonic scaler, which is a more efficient way to eliminate tartar. A handheld device is used to produce vibrations and sound waves in your mouth to break apart the obstinate tartar.

Once the teeth and gums are cleaned of build-up plaque, the following step is the deep cleaning of the teeth by Prophy-Jet. Instead of using a rubber cup, this technology uses a pressurized spray of air, water and powder (either a non-sodium or sodium bicarbonate) to clean the soft deposits.

Teeth are polished with a special paste to remove extrinsic stains on the teeth caused by various foods and beverages. Prophy-Jet is an effective substitute for the traditional polishing system, as it does not use any unpleasant pastes for polishing. Teeth cleaning is a preventive dentistry procedure that is recommended at intervals of six months to make teeth clean, strong, and white so patients can feel confident.
