Somerset Clinic Dubai

new born

Breastfeeding support is a service we offer new mothers, or education for mothers to be. As breast milk is the better option for all babies, most mothers would like to breastfeed however difficult that might be. If you plan to breastfeed, and need help, our specialist will do all she can to make this process enjoyable, healthy, comfortable and safe for you and your baby.

If the birth took place in one of our maternity hospitals, a breastfeeding specialist supports the woman from the first feeding. For mothers who have experienced difficulties in breastfeeding, and who gave birth in other medical institutions, qualified assistance from our doctors is also provided. The support service works around the clock, a specialist can come to your home to provide qualified assistance at any time of day.

The importance and necessity of breastfeeding is recognized by many, but it is not always possible to overcome the difficulties that a nursing mother has. After giving birth, the young mother will have to choose the method of feeding the precious baby. The feeding method is decided upon right after birth, in consultation with the neonatologist and obstetrician-gynaecologist.

How Can We Help?

The breastfeeding position and the way the baby attaches to the breast are evaluated, and other positions that may be useful in certain situations are demonstrated. The mother is then taught about how to use her manual or electric breast pump if needed, as well as provided information on storing expressed breast milk properly.

Post Mastitis Care: The appropriate care for the infected breast and how to express milk from it so that new infections will not occur.

Sleepy Baby: For some babies, weak sucking is a problem that leads to sleeping on the breast and inadequate feeding. A combination of techniques – including suck training for these babies – are used to ensure adequate milk transfer during each daily feed.

Direct Breastfeeding: Some babies feed on expressed milk or have mixed feeding, but direct breastfeeding is still a challenge for some infants and their mothers. These babies and mothers are evaluated and taught step by step process to help them start direct breastfeeding.

Mother with Inverted Nipples: Inverted nipples are a common breastfeeding problem, and mothers are advised on the type of technique to use based on how much their nipples have turned inward. In most cases, direct breastfeeding can successfully be achieved.

Breast Surgeries: Mothers who have undergone breast surgeries are assessed by our lactation consultant, and they receive guidance on how to continue breastfeeding.

Adoptive Breastfeeding: Mothers who have adopted babies and never previously breast-fed are also evaluated for suitability, if they wish to do so.
