Occupational therapy is a type of treatment in which the patient is involved in an artificially created labor process.
The goals of occupational therapy are: restoration or maintenance of mental functions and physical condition disturbed by the disease, establishing interaction and communication with other people, and social adaptation. In addition, this type of treatment has a teaching and developmental effect. For a healthy person, work is a natural need. In many diseases, the ability to work is reduced or completely lost. The restoration of labouractivity is not only the goal of treatment but, as experience has shown, it is also a means of treating many diseases.
Occupational therapy involves helping people of all ages (from newborns to older adults) who have an illness or disability to do those things that are important and meaningful to them, for example, eating, brushing, dressing, school activities, and work. It includes working with patients after they’ve had a stroke, brain injury, orthopaedic conditions or elderly individuals experiencing physical changes, chronic pain and other conditions limiting participation in activities of daily living.
The therapeutic effect of occupational therapy is achieved through a complex effect on the patient’s body:
Occupational therapy has received the greatest distribution in psychiatry – in the treatment of mental disorders and behavioral disorders. First of all, due to its high efficiency. The use of labour therapy in combination with other traditional therapeutic methods accelerates recovery, reducing the period of disability and improving the quality of life of the patient and his environment.
Occupational therapy plays a large therapeutic role in endogenous procedural diseases (past psychoses, schizophrenia, schizotypal disorders, prolonged and resistant depressive states), borderline mental disorders (personality disorders, PTSD, neurotic personality development, etc.), organic mental disorders, alcohol, drug, drug addiction.
